First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist
The Sacraments of First Reconciliation & First Holy Eucharist
Depending on the age of your child, and participation in a formal faith formation/religious education program, preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist at OLV/OLS can take place in one of two ways:
- Catholics who were baptized as infants or young children and under the age of seven, begin their formal faith formation in Grade 1. It is in the context of this ongoing formation that they enroll in this pre-preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist in Grade 1 and make the Sacraments in spring of Grade 2. Please see Faith Formation Information and Registration procedures below.
- Order of Christian Initiation For Children/Youth that are baptized Catholics over 7 years old, in Grades 3-8 that have not participated in any formal faith formation/religious education program. Please contact Caitlin, Coordinator of Faith Formation and Youth Ministry, at faithformation@olvols.org | (518) 273-7602 ext. 102.
First Reconciliation
As a parent/guardian, you are your child's first teacher, especially of faith. Your child watches what you do, absorbs your values, and looks to you for guidance. It is through you that your child learns to relate to God and others. Modeling for your child an openness to receiving the gift of God's unconditional love is perhaps the core of your parental responsibility.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation, whether or not it is being celebrated for the first time, is a time for the family to become more fully open to the forgiving love God lavishes upon us and its power to heal and change our hearts.
2nd Grade First Reconciliation Preparation will take place during Sunday Faith Formation Classes September through January. The Sacrament of First Reconciliation will be held on a Saturday morning.
First Holy Eucharist
“The Sacrament of the Eucharist is one of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. The Eucharist is the ritual, sacramental action of giving thanks and praise to the Father. First Eucharist brings Catholics together to share the Body and Blood of Christ, which is the heart and summit of the Church's life. (CCC, #1407).
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. Out of His love for us, Jesus gave us the Blessed Sacrament where He is truly present in body, blood, soul, and divinity!
The second half of Grade 2 focuses on teaching the children about the Eucharist and getting to experience Jesus in His house and adoring Him. The Sacrament of First Eucharist will be celebrated in early May 2026 at OLV.
If you are an adult seeking First Reconciliation, First Communion or any other Sacraments offered by the Church please contact Matt at youthministry@olvols.org or call (518) 273-7602 ext. 102 for information about OCIA.
