About the Novus Ordo Mass in Latin
Father Nathaniel Resila, Parochial Vicar, will be celebrating our Evening Mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as a Latin Novus Ordo. Please join us for this Holy Day of Obligation as we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary.
What is a ‘Latin Novus Ordo’? …….. It is the Mass you see and hear every Sunday, but parts of it will be in Latin while others remain in English.
Will I understand it? ……. You will be surprised how much you are actually familiar with. We will also have leaflets available which will have all responses, readings, and hymns for the faithful.
Is this the Mass the Church would celebrate before the Second Vatican Council? ……No. This is the Mass that is the ordinary form of the Roman Rite that the Church has celebrated since 1969. The documents of Vatican II gave great flexibility to use either Latin or English in its celebration of the Holy Mass.
I thought Vatican II got rid of Latin?....Nope. It is still the sacred language of the Roman Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Council did give the Church more flexibility to use the native language of the people in parts of the Mass while also expecting members of the faithful to better learn the Latin portions of the Mass. While English may be our cultural language in this country, Latin is our sacred language as Roman Catholics and part of our beautiful heritage.
